When where you planning to come home?
If you should see this today Feb 20/08 a very exciting thing is happening a total lunar eclipse tonite. On a full moon such as today the lunar orbit passes behind the Earth, making an eclipse possible. As the moon moves into the Earth's shadow the full moon becomes partially eclipsed. Once completely immersed in the shadow, the moon is only illuminated by light diffracted in the Earth's atmosphere. The atmosphere filters out almost all blue light. As a result, the moon can appear yellow, brown or deep red. Starts at 7:43pm Partial lunar eclipse begins. 9:01 total eclipse begins. 9:26PM Mid eclipse. 9:51PM total eclipse ends. 11:09PM Partial eclipse ends. So you will see a shadow on the left side of the moon..which continues to creep across until it swallows the entire surface at around 9:01PM. As the moon rises higher into the sky and grows darker, Saturn will become visible on the moon's lower left side and the bright star Regulus will appear, shining just above the moon. While Saturn and the moon may appear to be close together from Earth during the eclipse, they actually aren't. Saturn is like a billion and half kilometres away from the moon. It just happens to be in our line of sight in the same direction. The most dramatic shifts will be between 8PM and 10:30PM. Every 5 min it'll look different. It'll be the last total lunar eclipse visible from Manitoba until 2010. Perhaps you will be able to witness this from Mexico..grab a beer and get some moonshine/ light..mother nature is entertaining tonite. xoxo gloria
